The Healing Legacy of Thai Massage The Story of Lanna and the Wisdom of Wat Pho During my healing retreats in Thailand, my teachers often told me a story about how Thai massage began in a small village. They spoke of a time long ago, in the green hills of northern Thailand, where a young woman named Lanna lived. From a young age, she was captivated by the stories her grandmother shared—stories of the ancient healing arts practiced at Wat Pho temple in Bangkok. Lanna’s grandmother was the village healer, passing down the wisdom of Thai massage from mother to daughter, generation after generation. One day, while Lanna was working in the village’s herbal garden, an elder named Somchai approached her. Known for his wisdom and kindness, Somchai had been struggling with back pain that no remedy seemed to ease. With hope in his voice, he asked if Lanna could help. Lanna remembered what her grandmother had taught her and gently agreed. She led Somchai to a peaceful spot under a banyan tree, where sunlight filtered softly through the leaves. Sitting quietly, she centered herself, breathing deeply, connecting to the ancient practices in her heart. She began with slow, rhythmic pressure along Somchai’s legs, pressing with her palms and thumbs along the Sen lines—the energy pathways of the body. At first, Somchai winced, but soon his face relaxed as the tension started to melt away. Lanna worked her way to his back, using her elbows and knees to ease the tight knots of pain. She carefully guided him through gentle stretches, opening his body and helping energy flow freely again. Her touch was steady, caring, and filled with intention—just as her grandmother had shown her. When the session ended, Somchai sat up slowly. His face lit up with relief. He stood, feeling lighter, freer, and deeply grateful. With tears in his eyes, he thanked Lanna—not just for the physical release, but for the peace she had brought to his heart. Soon, word of Lanna’s gift spread throughout the village. People came from near and far, seeking her healing touch. And every time she placed her hands on someone in need, she honored her grandmother’s teachings, keeping the tradition alive. And so, the art of Thai massage continued—passed down from generation to generation, from heart to heart, one healing touch at a time.
